Dental Hygiene Week

Despite the rainy weather all week, we had a great time.  We learned about brushing our teeth and how to take care of our mouth.  Our health nurse recently purchased a couple of sets of "Flossy Pals" which are stuffed animals with realistic looking teeth.  We used these in many ways throughout the week.

On Monday, we counted our "Flossy Pals" teeth, then counted our own teeth.  We also used a GIANT toothbrush to brush his teeth.  The students were able to play with the stuffed animals all week in the dramatic play center.  We were also fortunate enough to recieve a donation from Dr. Maisey's Dental clinic of dentist masks and bibs.  The students loved pretending to be a dentist!

On Tuesday, we painted teeth printed on yellow paper.  We used white paint to make the teeth look like our teeth using a toothbrush.  The students started laughing when we told them we were going to "brush teeth with paint" today.  They did great at painting the teeth in a circular motion, just like when we brush our own teeth.

On Wednesday, we read a great book about "Moose's Loose Tooth."  Moose had a loose tooth that wouldn't come out, but with the help of his friends, he was able to leave the tooth fairy a moose's tooth, even if it was in Elephant's belly.

On Thursday, we did a demonstration using eggs to imitate our teeth.  We dipped them in milk, water and soda and watched how the one in water didn't change, the one in milk looked whiter, and the one in soda turned brown.  We decided that milk and water are better choices for our teeth.

Next week starts our apple theme.  We have lots of great projects to do.

We made it through!

Our first week of school went really well.  The students are great and we only had a couple of tears, but I think everyone is excited for our year to come.  We spent most of the week working on routine and how our class is run.  We also worked on a couple of pieces of artwork that will be placed into our portfolios for parent/teacher conferences.  These include self portraits, pictures of our family, and cutting out shapes.  These pieces of work are great for showing progression throughout the year.  We were also able to have our first fire drill.  Luckily the students listened amazingly and everything went smoothly.

This next week we will focus on dental hygiene.  A local dentist donated masks and bibs for our students to play with.  We will also practice teeth brushing through different lessons.  Watch for pictures in next weeks blog!
